Value Portraits

At first, Mr. Sands took pictures with a light shining on us to cast a shadow. Then we each randomly chose a classmate to draw. We then traced the shapes of the shadows of the printed pictures, and transferred those shapes to our sketch books. Those shapes were used to create each face.

I found the different values in the portrait by first looking for the lightest areas, and then gradually moving towards the shadowed, darker ares.

I achieved full range of values for the most part in this project. Her right eye, which was in the light, has bright white highlights. However her left eye, which was in the dark, is much less noticeable and much darker in value.

My artwork was crafted with much care and neatness. I took my time and really worked to make everything blend together nicely. It might not look exactly like the picture, but I think it turned out really well.

Some obstacles I had to face included smudging. I had to be really careful where I placed my hand so that I would not mess up the drawing. Another task I had difficulty with was her braces! They needed to be included, but it was a lot harder than it would seem, so I saved those for last.

Turlte Drawing

Drawing a turtle that will not stop moving has to be one of the most difficult things... that's why I liked the dead butterflies better.

Moss Drawing

Although we are still waiting for the moss to grow, this was a just-for-fun-kinda group project.
